artist statement
I CREATE the art I need to receive. I am writing the book I wish I’d read as a teen. I am building an interconnected body of work because all life is interconnected and it hurts all of us when we live like we’re not. I make performances and objects that the audience completes by adding their mark to the work, by letting themselves be transformed by the experience. I know you are out there, looking for that experience, that gentle connection, that story that resonates. You are my unsuspecting collaborator.
I WANT us to wake from the lie that “things have always been this way” and dismantle the structures that exist around us, and inside of us, to keep us struggling. I want us to return to ourselves, our gifts, and that requires uprooting old trees and replacing them with native plants. I want us to question, learn, grow, think critically, become okay with being wrong sometimes, become okay with being kind always, because I don’t see another way that we can build a world where everyone thrives.
EVERYTHING I do, and everything I make, is driven by the urge to uncover who I am, and who you are, when we peel back the layers of societal expectations, roles and behaviors dictated by oppressive systems. I live my life in constant pursuit of my truest expression. Because the more space I make for myself, the more space I have to listen. To love.
